Allergy vacuum cleaners 'no help to asthma victims'

In an article printed in the Manchester Evening News in February 2006 it was stated that vacuum cleaners designed to trap the tiny particles that cause allergies don't work, according to researchers.

Scientists from Manchester University tested five branded cleaners with high-efficiency particulate air filters - marketed at reducing dust mites which can cause asthma attacks and irritate other allergies.

They found the specialist filters, which can add £100 on the price of a vacuum, don't offer any extra protection for the one in three people who suffer from allergies

Who's slept in my bed?

In an article printed in the Manchester Evening News in February 2006 it was stated that sleeping in a typical british hotel bed means sharing it with more than 2,000 other people.

New figures show the average hotel mattress has had 2,375 people sleeping on it during its lifetime

British hotels had a 65 per cent occupancy rate in 2005, so over a year each room had someone sleeping in it for 237 days.

Not only is sanitation an issue, but changes in our bodies over the years mean that we should also reassess whether or not our mattresses are still effectively meeting our needs," Badman concludes.
